(1Co 6:11) “And such were some of you:…but ye are sanctified,… in the name of the Lord Jesus, and by the Spirit of our God.” The word “sanctified” comes from the root word, “holy”. So, it means more than to be set apart unto God. “Holy” means separate from all sin. Put together, positionally in the sight of God we have been made without sin in His presence. The next word, “justified” spells that out (tomorrow’s).

(1Co 6:11) “And such were some of you: but ye are washed…in the name of the Lord Jesus, and by the Spirit of our God.” When one repents (desires to live as the Lord desires them to live) and turn in faith to Christ’s death on the cross for their sins (the Name of the Lord Jesus), they are washed in His blood: Psa_51:7 “Purge me with hyssop (how the blood was applied to the doorpost), and I shall be clean: wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow.” This is done by the Spirit of God.

What if your fiancé came to you and said, “I am pregnant with God’s Son.” Would you have believed her? Joseph finds himself in that very situation. It could have turned out much differently if God had not intervened.

(1Co 6:11) “And such were some of you: but ye are washed, but ye are sanctified, but ye are justified in the name of the Lord Jesus, and by the Spirit of our God.” To those who have been birthed spiritually into the family of God, the things listed here have taken place: washing of sin, sanctification, justification. To continue to practice the sins of the unsaved, is to sin against the blood that bought you (v.20).

The Lord Jesus is revealed to be not only the Son of God, but plainly God in every way. We take a look at how, though made “lower than the angels for the suffering of death”, the Father directs the angels to worship Him as God incarnate.

(1Co 6:9) Know ye not that the unrighteous shall not inherit the kingdom of God? Be not deceived: neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor effeminate, nor abusers of themselves with mankind, (10) Nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners, shall inherit the kingdom of God.” Context of this with previous chapter – these things to our knowledge is not to be practiced by membership of the church. Such should be rebuked, no matter the person. Why? The Lord’s reputation and our love for Him is to come before all others.

(1Co 6:8) “Nay, ye do wrong, and defraud, and that your brethren. (9) Know ye not that the unrighteous shall not inherit the kingdom of God? Be not deceived: neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor effeminate, nor abusers of themselves with mankind, (10) Nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners, shall inherit the kingdom of God. If Jesus is not Lord of all He is not Lord at all.

1Co 6:6) “But brother goeth to law with brother, and that before the unbelievers. (7) Now therefore there is utterly a fault among you, because ye go to law one with another. Why do ye not rather take wrong? why do ye not rather suffer yourselves to be defrauded?” It is better to suffer wrong or loss than to reveal to the lost the lack of love among God’s people. Instead, we are quick to share gossip with others.

Such put self before the reputation of Christ. At the heart of all sin is love for self.

(1Co 6:4) “If then ye have judgments of things pertaining to this life, set them to judge who are least esteemed in the church. (5) I speak to your shame. Is it so, that there is not a wise man among you? no, not one that shall be able to judge between his brethren?” I have never heard of this being practiced, though it should. It hasn’t because men love self more than the reputation of Christ in their community. Sad.
